McCain admitted to attending 2 special meetings with regulators about Keating's Lincoln Savings. So indirectly, by his position as a Senator, he was taking the side of Lincoln and Keating in these talks with the banking regulators. McCain said later. "I stated then I didn't want any special favors for them ( Lincoln ). I only wanted them ( Lincoln ) to be fairly treated." If McCain was so concerned about any appearances of improper meddling then why did he attend these special meetings?
McCain was never found guilty of any specific, illegal, wrongdoing by the Senate Ethics Committee but was highly criticized for using "poor judgment". You can interpet "poor judgement" in various degrees but you can't call McCain's “poor judgment” as being completely innocent in this case. I think McCain was lucky to escape prosecution and/or losing his Senate seat. Curiously neither happened? Why? Well McCain and the others were investigated by their peers in the Senate, not by any law enforcement agency or the Justice Department, and were excused with just a verbal warning without any criminal penalties. If you or I were caught taking "influence money" from a crook like Keating, who was sent to jail for his misdeeds, we would have received jail time and fired from our job.
Probably more Senators then you would guess take money from people like Keating and then use their political office to seek preferential treatment for their wealthy campaign contributors that get into trouble with the government. Apparently it is an acceptable Washington practice and is only a real political problem when they get caught as McCain did with Keating. This incident is not the first time McCain got involved with Keating and Lincoln Savings. While in the House, McCain, along with a majority of Representatives, co-sponsored a resolution to 'delay new regulations' designed to curb risky investments by thrifts such as Lincoln that was ran by McCain's friend and campaign contributor Keating.
Interesting, in contrast to his Senatorial involvement with the Keating affair, McCain in the 1999 Senate impeachment trial of Bill Clinton voted to convict the president on both the perjury and obstruction of justice charges, saying Clinton had “violated his sworn oath of office“. McCain who escaped criminal prosecution in the Keating affair had been investigated for using his office to influence bank regulators regarding Keating and now as a contrite Senate investigation survivor was excoriating Clinton for “abusing his sworn oath of office“.
Many Arizonan voters are just sick and tired of the whinny, hang dog faced McCain who always runs as a born again Republican but votes for legislation as a liberal who supports illegal immigration. McCain can’t escape his past liberal voting record regardless of how many self-righteous, anti-Hayworth attack ads he runs.
McCain, like most politicians of the past, believes that the candidate with the most campaign money, regardless of their voting background and leadership experience, wins. Then you buy and place hundreds or thousands of negative radio, TV and internet ads in a attempt to bury your opponent with half-truths and innuendos . All phony arguments to mischaracterize his opponent, J. D. Hayworth.
McCain has several million dollars left over from his Presidential race and has already started running daily, anti-Hayworth, attack ads. The main purpose of these ads are to marginalize Hayworth as a inept, inconsequential opponent. Unfortunately for McCain and his amateur, attack radio ads, J. D. Hayworth is not inept and is a smart, popular and capable Conservative candidate. If ineptitude was a deciding talking point then McCain wins the “ineptitude test“.
I don’t think that this new crop of lame, McCain attack ads are doing what they were designed to accomplish. Anybody that knows anything about McCain’s politics will see them as being just plain ludicrous. The McCain haters, who dislike McCain mainly for his liberal voting record, will not be persuaded by the shallowness of these ads. They have already made up their minds when they found out how McCain votes after he won the previous House/Senate elections.
Moderates or independents also won’t fall for these ads either. The only people that might fall for these ads are the politically uninformed, the casual, unsophisticated voter who does not watch or listen to politically oriented media programs, know nothing about the liberal side of McCain and don‘t really care one way or the other.
These ads are amusing, laughable, silly and infantile that tell you little or nothing about McCain or explain, to the middle of the road voters, McCain’s liberal voting record on one of Arizona’s biggest problems - Illegal immigration and the massive costs to Arizona taxpayers required to manage this problem. Supposedly you are to conclude that McCain is fighting for the voters of Arizona but the opposite is true.
McCain's support of Illegal Immigrants is at the bottom of many of the financial and crime problems currently plaguing the state. McCain’s Illegal Immigrant position is costing Arizona taxpayers millions in expenses for law enforcement and prisons associated with illegal immigrant gangs, drugs, kidnappings and gun trafficking. McCain isn’t fighting for Arizona. He is fighting for Illegal Immigrants, giving them civil rights and you the voters pay for all of the costs associated with this problem. As long as McCain supports illegal imigrants the illegal immigrants are encouraged by his support to keep coming across Arizona's southern border.
Here is another example of McCain supporting a issue that reflects McCain's Socialist, anti-business legislation. A bill recently introduced to the U.S. Senate, the Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010 (S. 3002), by Senators John McCain (R) and Byron Dorgan (D) is possibly the most direct assault on our freedom of health choices we have seen for some time. If passed into law, this bill would require all dietary supplement ( vitamins ) manufacturers, distributors, and holders all the way down to the retail store level to be registered with the FDA. Here is the real problem. It would also allow for the arbitrary banning of nutritional supplements by some bueaurcrat at the FDA if anyone reported a “adverse event” related to their vitamin consumption. There is no description or expanation what is a 'Adverse Event".
The McCain/Dorgan Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010 is more than a serious attack on our freedom of choice, it is also a symptom of an even larger problem. The McCain-Dorgan bill is not just another silly attempt by corrupt politicians wanting to appear as if they are protecting you from some unknown threat but it is a blatant attempt to implement Codex Alimentarius at the national level and move the United States away from our heritage of freedom of choice. The Socialists, like McCain, in the European Union has already passed similar legislation in the European Union Food Supplements Directive which has stifled citizens of the Eropean Union rights to buy vitamins of their choice. The Socialists in Canada have passed similar laws in recent weeks.
Time and time again McCain is working in Washington against you the voters with his Socialist "do-good" philosophy. He does not care about how much it costs taxpayers or how much it harms taxpayers as a result of these Socialist laws. We as voters don’t need or want McCain or his anti-American, anti-business Socialist laws. Send him to Canada or Europe where the Socialists have already turned those countries into freedom robbing economies through Socialist policies.
This is another example, in line with his Illegal Immigration Bill, why McCain is a danger to our own personal freedom to choose. McCain must be removed from office this year ASAP before he is able to pass yet another Socialist law that will destroy the vitimin industry and strangle our freedom to buy any legal supplements we want without Big Government McCain telling us what we can and can't do.
Aside from all of his big Socialist laws and philosophy I have never liked McCain the politician. Never have. He is the Senator from Arizona, one of the main border states where thousands of illegal immigrants flood across the border on a daily basis. He has done nothing, like the former liberal Governor Napolitano, to put a stop to illegal immigration. He does just the opposite. He legislates from his lofty, pompous position that he, McCain the Senator, is far smarter and knowledgable than the voters of Arizona on illegal immigration and now Vitamins. What McCain is saying to the voters is to just sit back and shut up and let me tell you what is good for you!
If you didn’t know about McCain’s past Socialist voting record on illegal immigration then his current radio attack ads makes McCain sound and look even more petty and arrogrant than he already is. I think that McCain knows he is in trouble with keeping his Senate seat and is desperately trying to redefine his Socialist voting record as well as his opponent, J. D. Hayworth. The current crop of attacks ads were not created by McCain himself and clearly pin points McCains lack of awareness of the voters current mood against liberal causes. If McCain is relying on these ads to defeat his opponent then he is completely out of touch with the voters of Arizona.
McCain's voice when he speaks sounds weak, feeble, whiney, insincere and just uninspiring. Why? Like many people like McCain, who manage to get elected, they are nothing more than manufactured, manicured politicians created by professional, political handlers, as was Obama. They repeat the same old, political clichés and in McCain's case he always campaigns on his family's Navy name and background, his prisoner of war notoriety that occurred over 40 years ago.
I have never felt that one's military background, regardless, should be a reason to vote for someone like McCain and yet he uses it as a crutch in every election to gain voter's sympathy even after 40 years have passed since that event.
Other than the time he served in the Navy he has never worked at any job outside of the Government, like Obama, that would qualify him to serve in the U. S. Senate. McCain has been a Senator way past any usefulness to the state or to the voters of Arizona and simply uses his Senate seat to support his own personal, misguided Socialistic ideology and votes with Democrats on liberal/Socialist policies that are, in total, anti-conservative, anti-American, anti-business and goes against the will of the people.
He doesn’t represent Arizonans or the Conservative cause. He hob-nobs with other wealthy Liberal politicians like himself. He seems to thoroughly buy into the left wing media's description of himself as a distinguished, savvy, smart, political leader. Senators like McCain are delusional and are no better, smarter or more capable than any other candidate except he votes for useless, wasteful Liberal/Socialist causes like illegal immigrants and now he wants the Government to control the sale of vitimins. What's next from the Liberal Senator McCain?
The McCain prototype of a manufactured politician is a prime example of what voters don't want. A over paid government employee who goes to Washington, lives the Washington high life, appears on TV news programs to promote himself, works a few months out of the year and spends massive amounts of your tax money on wasteful, social liberal bills and uses campaign money from people like Keating to hold onto their Senate seat and then brags that he is "fighting" for the voters of Arizona. What a laugh! I don’t think Arizona needs the McCain type of Senator anymore and I don’t think Arizona ever needed his type of politician.
McCain is just someone from the “old’ school of Progressive/Liberal Senators who try to pass themselves off as Conservative at election time but votes as a liberal with his Democrat friends. He is way past his prime and needs, as Hayworth clearly explains, to be sent home for good before he can wreck any more havoc on our American conservative traditions and ideals.
Even his own mother said “you had to hold your nose when you vote for McCain.” Arizonan moderates who may have voted for McCain in the past may finally have learned their lesson with McCain and hopefully will vote against him. J. D. Hayworth is a much stronger and popular opponent running as a real conservative that reflects the philosophy of the majority of Arizona voters.
I think McCain won past Senate contests mainly because he never had a real strong Conservative opponent and won because he was the least offensive of the opposing candidates. The best of the worse candidate theory.
Hayworth is a true alternative, Conservative candidate that was missing in past McCain Senate races and probably is the main reason for McCain’s stepping up his attack ads against the Conservative Hayworth.
